For over 30 years OPERA Iowa has created magic in rural schools, city classrooms, cafetoriums, community centers, concert halls and gymnasiums, offering over 800,000 young people and adults a quality arts experience today while building new enthusiastic opera audiences for tomorrow. As the state’s largest and most expansive program in arts education and one of the most innovative programs of its kind, Des Moines Metro Opera’s 12-week regional arts education tour features comprehensive study guides, curriculum-based workshops, masterclasses as well as live musical performances designed specifically for young people and families. The nine-member OPERA Iowa Troupe features young professionals from across the country whose sole goal is to captivate their audiences.
Our 31st annual tour will feature productions of Jack & the Beanstalk and Rossini’s hilarious comedy, The Barber of Seville. Book a performance for your local school or concert association TODAY! In 2016 OPERA Iowa appeared in 66 communities across Iowa and South Dakota for a total of 90 residencies, presenting 67 performances of The Billy Goats Gruff, 16 performances of Cinderella, 172 in-class workshops, 5 masterclasses and 6 aria concerts. In many instances the troupe members found themselves in both urban and rural schools in which the students have limited, if any, access to music and arts education. Often their residency represented the only arts education experience for those students during the entire academic year, making the responsibilities of their work more keenly realized and increasingly essential.
