The soprano with “a voice of dazzling security and range, topped by a wonderfully projected mezzo voice that makes you hang onto every note…” (Classical Source), Mané Galoyan makes her company and role debut with DMMO as Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème!
In our second artist Q&A of the season, the Armenian native shares her love of La Traviata, her musical origins in piano, and her upcoming travels to Hawaii!
How did you discover opera, and when did you know it is something you wanted to make a career out of?
I come from a musical family. I was very close with my grandpa and he was the first person to introduce me to classical and jazz music in my early childhood. I started to go to musical school for piano and voice when I was 9. And initially singing was just an extra class to take, it wasn’t my focus at all. I loved playing the piano and wanted to be a pianist very badly, but singing was coming to me much more naturally and with less effort. After long debates I decided I would pursue singing and started my Bachelor’s degree majoring in opera singing when I was 17.
What other careers have you considered pursuing outside of singing?
I always wanted to make music, but my dad was always trying to get me into being doctor or a lawyer…something “real” 🙂
What is your favorite role you’ve sung?
My favorite role and a dream role for me that I sung is Violetta Valery! I will never get tired or bored of La Traviata!
What role would you like to perform someday, and if you could sing any role (regardless of fach), what would you most like to sing?
Lady Macbeth, Carmen, Dalilah, Nemorino for “Una furtiva”
What are you most excited about this season?
This coming season is quite busy for me, but I am most excited to sing Countess Almaviva’s role in The Marriage of Figaro with Hawaii Opera Theater. The best combination of things – that’s my favorite opera and I will get to hang out in Hawaii for a month! Couldn’t ask for a better gig!
Favorite part about your role/this opera?
Musetta is also one of my favorite characters and this is not only house debut for me, but also a role debut. I’ve been looking forward to creating this character for a long time. My favorite part about the role is that she is such a colorful and full of life person! And she might not be of the best behavior, but she has a big, kind heart and character evolves over the course of the opera. The best part about this opera…I could not take it apart! I LOVE THIS OPERA!
What can audiences expect from your performance in La Bohème?
The audiences can expect to leave the theater with a heart full of emotions and a desire to hear the music all over again!
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I don’t think there is anything to be surprised about me, I am an open book!
What advice do you have for aspiring opera singers?
If music is not your passion, don’t pursue the career, because it is a tough journey you are signing up for
